Remarkable dependability, durability, reduced stress, superior safety and much more is what the Hyundai 9 series state-of-the art earthmoving equipment entails.

All these factors and more were taken into account by Paul Heslop, one of the founders’ of Rhino Earthmovers when purchasing the 52 ton Hyundai R520LC-9S Excavator and the 84 ton Hyundai R850LC-9 Excavator. These excavators are fitted with Xcentric Rippers.

Paul passionately describes how the four companies within the Rhino Earthmovers group came about. For roughly 32 years the Paul Heslop Plant Services, one of the first and existing Plant Hire companies in the industry, have been renting TLB’s and Excavators with attachments to companies in the construction and mining industries.

The company then expanded to The P Heslop Business Trust which was set up in 1996, to among other things afford Plant Hire across the borders of South Africa. The third company, Rhino Excavator Hammers has been in existence since 2008 and mainly supply and service attachments for Excavators.

The newest addition to the group is Rhino Earthmovers, which started trading in 2017 and is currently doing Excavator/Ripper rig hire on the gold mines in Gauteng. The company has developed the ripper rig concept, which prove that open cast mining in tough ground conditions can be done very efficiently without the use of any explosives. Paul claims that “These ecological techniques and conservation concepts provide the company with a competitive advantage above the rest.”

Paul indicates “The general construction industry is presently quite depressed, we focus on finding new mining and earthworks hire contracts, utilising Hyundai machines where possible”.

The shared interest for the environment came into play when the partnership between Rhino Earthmovers and HPE Africa was established. Hyundai asserts with engine technology, which is electronically controlled for optimum fuel to air ratio and clean efficient combustion. Hyundai’s RMS (Remote Management System) also works via GPS/satellite/GSM technology to deliver improved customer service and support.

The 9 series Excavators were designed with long-life components. The bushings were designed for lube intervals of 250hrs (standard daily maintenance still required), the polymer shims were designed to be wear resistant and noise reducing and the hydraulic filters only need to be replaced at 1,000hrs. Which extends service intervals and ultimately diminishes operational costs and reduces machine down time.

The precision, performance and profitability of Hyundai Excavators was made prevalent by Rhino Earthmovers. Paul proudly states in his interview, “The Hyundai product was marketed really well by HPE Africa, they are reasonably priced and in our opinion offer excellent value. Sales are backed up with a competent and efficient workshop department that allows us to deliver on our tender commitments resulting in HPE Africa being our preferred supplier. Our considered plan is to extend our fleet with more 38 to 85 tons Hyundai Excavators”.

HPE Africa, exclusive distributors of Hyundai construction equipment, McCloskey screens and crusher and Soosan hydraulic breakers in Southern Africa, operates a countrywide network of well-equipped spares and workshop outlets.
